October Birth Flower: Marigold & Cosmos (Meaning + How to Grow Them)

October birth flower Marigold and Cosmos are my favorite! Both so easy to grow and so whimsical and beautiful. It is a month of rich color, and the final burst of blooms before frost. No matter what I do my cosmos seem to take over my garden in October for one final burst of blooms. It feels like my garden waving goodbye in one final show stopping super bloom. The birth flowers for October—marigold and cosmos—perfectly reflect the season with their warm tones and effortless beauty.

Why You Should Grow September Birth Flower

Now that you know the flowers have you ever considered growing them? How fun would it be to have a garden full of the birth flowers of all your loved ones? Maybe your children, siblings, or loved ones that have moved on from this life. You can be in your garden and remember them, or maybe feel them with you. How healing for the soul, or just fun! Your front yard could depict your family without a family photo. Flowers have such a healing effect on the soul. My front yard is dedicated to flowers. Flowers I love and flowers that the people I love, love. Shasta daisies for my mother in law, lilacs for my grandma Mary, daffodils for my grandma Oda, hydrangeas for my mom, and peonies for me. Grow flowers that have meaning, and I think growing birth flowers is a great place to start.

How to Grow Marigolds

Marigolds are one of the easiest flowers to grow and are great for beginners. My daughters plant marigolds in their fairy gardens every year and can withstand the rough housing of a toddler. 🙂

1. When to Plant

  • Sow seeds after the last frost in spring (your last frost date can be found with a simple google search)
  • They grow quickly and bloom all summer into fall

2. Where to Plant

  • Full sun is best (at least 6 hours daily)
  • They adapt well to most soil types, as long as it drains well

3. How to Plant

  • Plant seeds ¼ inch deep
  • Space plants 6–12 inches apart, depending on variety
  • Most plant nursery will have marigolds to plant in the spring

4. Watering & Care

  • Water regularly, but let soil dry slightly between watering
  • Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent disease
  • No heavy fertilizing needed—they thrive in average soil

5. Keep Them Blooming

  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms
  • They naturally repel some garden pests, making them great companion plants

How to Grow Cosmos

Cosmos are low-maintenance and thrive on a bit of neglect—making them ideal for busy gardeners. At this point I don’t every plant cosmos in my garden because they reseed and come back every year.

1. When to Plant

  • Direct sow seeds after the last frost, they grow easily from seeds.
  • They grow quickly and bloom within weeks

2. Where to Plant

  • Full sun 6-8 hours
  • They prefer poor to average soil—too rich soil leads to fewer flowers

3. How to Plant

  • Scatter seeds and lightly cover with soil
  • Space plants 12–18 inches apart

4. Watering & Care

  • Water lightly until established
  • Once mature, they are drought-tolerant
  • Avoid fertilizing—this encourages leafy growth over blooms

5. Encourage More Blooms

  • Deadhead regularly
  • Cut flowers often—they make beautiful bouquets and promote more blooms
