March Birth Flower Meaning, Gift Ideas, & How to Grow
What is the Birth Flower for March?
The March birth flower are daffodils. To be honest I used to hate daffodils. Their obnoxious highlighter yellow was to much for me, BUT now there are SO many varieties of daffodils. It is amazing all the different shapes, colors, and petals. Now I love these first flowers to bloom in the spring.

Daffodil Flower Meaning
Daffodils symbolize renewal and rebirth because they bloom in early spring, often weeks before the last frost. They represent new beginnings, optimism, and hope. In addition, daffodils are associated with joy and the promise of prosperity. In some cultures, they are symbols of friendship and good fortune, and can also signify regard and admiration. Some people also link daffodils to the idea of eternal life, because they are a reliable bloom each year.
Why You Should Grow Daffodils
Now that you know the flower have you ever considered growing them? How fun would it be to have a garden full of the birth flowers of all your loved ones? Maybe your children, siblings, or loved ones that have moved on from this life. You can look at your garden and remember them, or maybe feel them with you. How healing for the soul, or just fun! Your front yard could depict your family without a family photo. Flowers have such a healing effect on the soul. My front yard is dedicated to flowers. Flowers I love and flowers that the people I love, love. Shasta daisies for my mother in law, lilacs for my grandma Mary, daffodils for my grandma Oda, hydrangeas for my mom, and peonies for me. Grow flowers that have meaning, and I think growing birth flowers is a great place to start.

How to Grow Daffodils
Growing daffodils is as simple as growing any bulb, in the fall 6-8 weeks before your expected first frost follow the steps below
- Purchase bulbs from any garden store, or if you want special varieties purchasing online will be a better choice
- Dig a hole 3-4 inches deep
- Lay the bulbs in the hole with the pointy side up 3-6 inches apart
- Cover with dirt
- Water
- DONE
Some other important facts to know is Daffodils grow in zones 3-9 and some varieties can be grown in warmer climates. Daffodils can be planted in full sun or partial sun. If the ground freezes or is covered in snow you will not need to water until the spring if the dirt dried out. Be careful to not over water which will cause the bulbs to rot in the ground. Covering the bulbs with mulch (straw, wood chips, or dried leaves) will help retain moister and you will not have to water as much.
Daffodils will also come back every year! Every few years you might want to dig up the bulbs to spread out.
I plant a bag of daffodils or tulips every fall because I know I will need the happy flowers to come up in the early spring to give me the hope I need coming out of the cold winter. Every year it gets better and better and one day I will have a spectacular spring bulb show in my front yard.
Daffodils as a Cut Flower
You know I can’t talk about flowers without talking about cutting them and bringing them inside. For me and most climates daffodils are the first flower to bloom in the spring. My daughters and I anticipate and watch the stems burst through the snow and dirt in the chilly spring days. We all get so excited and when the first flower opens I cut it and bring it inside. This has become very symbolic to me that the cold is well on its way out and the start of the growing flowers season.
Something VERY IMPORTANT to know about daffodils is that they will give off a “milk” when you cut them put them in water. It doesn’t matter as long as you have a vase of only daffodils. If you put any other flower in with the fresh cut flower the other flower will die. If you want other flowers with the daffodils, cut the daffodils and let them sit in their own vase for a couple of hours. This will give the cut stem time to callus over and not sacrete the liquid any more.
